Abstract

International Arbitrators and Existential Problems

By The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG

English

During the meeting of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR that took place in Sydney on 7 October 2017, guest speaker Michael Kirby raised the crucial issues of nuclear weapons and devastating consequences of climate change and how they can overlap with dispute resolution. With a specialist insight and historical examples, this presentation acknowledges the usefulness of diplomacy, investigations, dispute resolution, and global international initiatives, such as the new ICC Task Force on ‘Arbitration of Environmental and Climate Change related Disputes’, for determining guidelines and legal tools in response to the concerns of the international community.
