Of late we notice that the insurance polices / certificates presented , does not appear to be an original one. It appears to be scanned copy of the original. In one instance the insurance policy presented stated on its face " this is electonically generated ".
The insurance document invariably states that in case of a claim the original needs to be presented.
Do we treat these insurance documents as original and accept it ? Is there any clarifiction or policy statement made by ICC on this ?
Best Regards

Non-original Insurance policy
Most douments in today's world are electronically created. Typewriters are few and far between. However, if it is hand signed or if it otherwise complies with UCP Article 17 or the ICC's policy statement doc. 470/871rev as to what constitutes an original document then banks will treat it as an original.
Non-original Insurance policy
Even if the document has been elevtronically generated in its entirety (signature included) banks are to treat it as an original.
You should perhaps refer to official opinion TA737rev which, though dealing with a somehow different situation, provides a clear guidance.
Have a nice day.

Svishu,
This is a major problem -in my opinion- that I have been corresponding with ICC UK over the last 12 months or so in an attempt to get a clear ICC opinion. I can well see a bank 'coming a cropper' accepting such a document as an original. I was told the new ISBP would resolve the problem but looking at the latest draft it does not, in my opinion. I will forward to you by e-mail what I sent to ICC UK.
Regards, JS
