Master Kitty

Post by cynthiawong » Mon Oct 29, 2001 12:00 am

The credit required an ocean BL.

The BL presented showed the vessel to be MV Kitty.
It was signed in the following manner:-

Signature

Master Kitty

I would appreciate it if you could advise me as to whether the words Master Kitty
are acceptable assuming the rest of the BL is in order?

Thanks!

The master should have stated, for clarity, "Master of M/V Kitty" to remove any trace of doubt.

As the master who signs the bill of lading by himself, he needs not give his name according to the UCP 500 transport Articles. So the name should appear to be the name of the ship, unless he is the father of "Hello Kitty". Cynthia, you should be able to determine this yourself.

Since you also mention that the other data contents are OK. That means in the "Vessel" box in thsi bill of lading, the name M/V Kitty must appear.

Mr. Lee

You made me laugh by your response, of course out of amusement. This "master kitty" is the husband of mistress kitty. It seems that the master wanted to show his masculine powers rather than powers vested to him as a shipmaster.

As a master of marime and transport issues have you ever come across a "female master" of a ship?

To answer your question "Why there is no, if not few, female master(s)?

One of the reasons is that because 99% of the crew members in a cargo ship are males. Imagine if you were a lady, would you feel safe spending months in the high seas with a lot of "hot" males surrounding you, like a cheese being put amid the rats?

Sailors have nothing to do in the boring times at sea, so they drink, and after a few whiskies (we dont't know how to spell this word, taking the Scottish or the Irish approach?), they see you, a beautiful master, can you imagine what would happen next?

Another reason is that some if not all seafarers are very superstitious. It is not lucky to have females on board.
