Cert of Insurance under Open Policy

Post by cynthiawong » Tue Nov 06, 2001 12:00 am

I would apppreciate if someone could advise me as to how to check a Certificate of Insurance (under an Open Policy) to determine the coverage.

We normally asked for marine policy or certificate covering Institute Cargo Clauses (A).
We don't encounter much problems with a marine policy but we seem to have a problem determining the coverage with the certificate presented.

Thank you.

This issue stems from the lack of knowledge about the difference between the insurance policy and insurance certificate.

Since I am in a middle of an urgent assignment I cannot right now elaborate, however I remember once Mr. T.O. LEE (well-informed about these issues) has addressed this issue here in the discussion forum. I would assume if you search for his post you would be satisfied with his response as it was all-encompassing the subject matter.

This brings back my suggestion to DC PRO to introduce a search facility for the discussion forum.

The Certificate should clearly state that it covers Institute Cargo Clauses (A). An Ins Cert is usually a single page document and, in my experience, risks covered are usually placed in a prominent position on the front.

ICC clause A is so common that it is usually preprinted on the insurance certificates.
