T.O.,
While I fully accept that there may be some banks that are indulging in unscrupulous and illegitimate practices, I must take issue with your statement “If you ask a banker publicly, he or she can NEVER give you the true answer’ [my emphasis]. Surely, a banker can give a true answer where his bank does not indulge in such practices? I would hope this is the vast majority. It certainly is the case with my own bank and I trust there are not any doubts on this.

Jeremy,
YOUR ARE NOT ALONE
Don't misunderstand our statements. Of course there are bankers who are ladies and gentlemen like those in your bank.
Just to give you a real life example. We still remember that the Guangdong Development Bank Head Office in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, requested us to prepare an Expert's Report on a DC dispute case on discrepancies. We were very impressed by their instructions: "T. O. Please give your opinions based on the documents. It is important that your opinions must be honest and impartial, even if they may not be favourable to us". Of course, as an Accredited Expert of the Academy of Experts, London, we are trained to stick to "two i's" - independent and impartial - under any circumstances.
So, Jeremy, you are not alone.
By the way, this bank is the first and only bank in China that voluntarily invited us to design a two-day in-house DC Risk Management workshop for them, based on their requirements. All senior managers from other parts of China flew to Guangzhou to attend them. Other banks in China only played a passive role by sending their staff members to open workshops presented by the various banking institutes.

As the century is only a year and a half old, the "Game of the century" does not amount to much. At the time of writing, it remains to be seen if it will live up to this description.

I do not see any reason why such addition should be a discrepancy. The fact alone that a document is being issued by different ways (handwriting, typewriting etc.) does not make this document discrepant. I once experienced the same problem with a duplicate railway consignment note being issued by typwriter and then the people at the railway station added some details such as weight etc.
For very good reasons "additions" are a topic not covered yet by ICC.

This is also a topic I had sent a reply on yesterday but it does not show up.
This "addition" needs no authentication as long as such addition does not alter the contents of the document in any way. The mere fact that a document is being issued in different ways (handwriting, typewriter etc) does not make this document discrepant.ICC up to now does not treat this subject for very good reasons and also the working group on ISBP did not.
Best regards
Heinz

my criticism of the "Game of the Century" was based on inappropriate hyperbole typified by media journalists. However, if we tacitly accept such descriptions by repeating them, it only encourages the increasing levels of hyperbole.

Laurence,
We see with your point.
But for argument sake, to observe your standard strictly, we cannot use this term "game of the century" until 12.00 midnight on the last day of that century. Otherwise there will always be a possibility that something more glamorous is going to happen.
