under Dcs calling for marine b/ls i have often come across bills of lading using the "place for delivery" box in addition to the port of discharge box.in some cases this box has an asterik next to it , which is explained on the face of the document in the following words.
"to be used only in case of multi- modal shipment' does this phrase qualifies as data content rendering the b/l as a combined transport document.

Data Content
A simple reading of Art 23 will give the answer. The allowance for a POR to be different to the POD applies. It is the POL to POD that has to meet the 'from/to' part of the l/c.
Data Content
I think i should clarify here, my query is not on POR or POD it is about a statement made on the BL stating that a particular box is to be used only when the document is to be used as a multi-modal document. does this statement qualify as "data content of the document rendering it as a multi-modal document.
Data Content
BL FOR PORT-TO-PORT SHIPMENT OR MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT SHIPMENT
This clause is clearly written on the face of the BL. Hence it is part of the data content of a BL, particularly if it is a "Bill of Lading for Port-to-Port Shipment or Mutimodal Transport Shipment". Whether it may turn a BL into a MT BL is another issue. The enquirer should look at the other data content of the BL to decide this.
TITLE VS. DATA CONTENT
The LC calls for a marine BL. So the enquirer should examine the BL using Article 23 of the UCP 500 as a starting point. The title of the BL is relatively not so important as its data content. If the data content of the BL, however named (so please do not put title before data content), complies with Article 23 of the UCP 500, the BL should be deemed as compliant.
ACCOMMODATION OF ARTICLE 23 OF UCP 500 ON PLACE OF DELIVERY
This clause does not affect the POL and POD. It only states the place of final destination/delivery. Since UCP 500 allows place of final destination/delivery to be different from POD, it does not make a marine BL discrepant for this reason alone, particularly in a "BL for Port-to-Port Shipment or Multimodal Transport Shipment".
