Brazilian companies may soon benefit from World Bank guarantees for investments in Africa.

According to the director of the World Bank for Brazil, Makhtar Diop, the guarantees could specifically encourage Brazilian investment in agricultural projects in Africa.

High-level meeting

The World Bank official made his comments ahead of a meeting of African agriculture ministers in Brazil in mid-May.

Participants at the meeting included the Brazilian president along with leaders of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the African Union and the World Bank.

A delegation of African ministers of Agriculture also attended what has been dubbed the Africa-Brazil dialogue.

Focus areas

It focused on increasing co-operation between Brazil and Africa in all aspects of agriculture.

Brazil already has close commercial and cultural links with Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa, notably Angola and Mozambique.
