An Indonesian lawmaker who helped start an inquiry into the 2008 bailout of Bank Century has been accused of using forged documents to obtain letters of credit (L/Cs) from the same bank.

Mukhamad Misbakhun and other lawmakers who initiated inquiries into the government bailout appear to have been consistently targeted by the authorities for their criticism of the government's role in Bank Century's rescue.

Accusation

A company owned by Misbakhun, PT Selalang Prima Internasional, is accused of forging information to obtain a L/C from Bank Century, according to a police spokesman.

"Documents that should support credit were not proper but the credit was given," he told local media.

More L/C irregularities

Ironically, Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (CEC) has criticised Bank Indonesia for ignoring L/C irregularities at Bank Century, which had to be bailed out. (DC World News, 16 December 2009)

Irregularities in Bank Century's L/C operations are also said to have contributed to the bank's collapse.
